Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord…

This is the scripture usually used to teach us why we should have children.  I didn’t understand it, though.  I just knew they were trying to say “Have Children.”  (And so I did.)

But it is actually a beautiful scripture.  It doesn’t mean “Have Children.”

What is an heritage?  I don’t think “heritage” means American Indian Heritage, or European Heritage.  That would mean that children are the background that the Lord descends from.  (Which makes a bit of sense, but not when it says AN heritage, like there are more than one.)

I think “heritage” comes the same word as “inheritance.”  Children are a gift from the Lord, because of who our parents are.
